Help! My 6 year old won’t stay in Bed
That’s the cry of many a Parent…
The key to winning this battle is the “No Response” method. By no response, I do not mean NO action. I simply mean …. do not acknowledge or speak to your child in any way. Avoid eye contact.
By Action, I mean …. pick up the child carry them to their bed, place them gently in the bed and walk away. Repeat as many times as necessary. This is a battle you must win.
If you appear angry or acknowledge the child they will continue to try to manipulate.
Do not give in to the demands for water or questions.
When putting your child to bed the first time, make sure they understand that they are not to get out of bed. Give them their hugs and kisses, let them know you love them and are proud of them but also let them know that it’s time to go to sleep.
The first night you try this approach might be a struggle of wills, but by the third night (if you are consistent) they will learn to stay in bed.
Remember to stay calm and matter of fact in your approach.
