Parenting greatly involves child training. Part of this training is to teach them to develop fine qualities and protect them from potential dangers ahead. But as they grow up, they must learn how to handle the hardships that life offers. You cannot always rescue them, whenever they are in trouble. They must learn how to handle challenging situations without retreat and they can only do that if they are responsible. True, teaching your children to take responsibility is a daunting task but the benefits that they get compensate all your efforts. Here are some valuable tips on how to teach your children to be responsible.

First, be a fine example to them. Let your words and deeds show exactly what it means to be responsible. You may at times feel weighed down by your responsibilities but remember that your fine example is the most powerful tool in teaching your children to be responsible people. From your example, children will see the importance of cultivating responsible behavior. Bringing your children to your work place occasionally will give them an idea on how you handle your responsibility to support the financial needs of the family. Discuss with them the joy you receive doing your responsibilities and show them the satisfaction it gives to you.

Second, have sensible expectations. It is ridiculous to require your children to assume responsibilities only adults can take. Assignments given to your children should just be right for their age. You may start by giving them the responsibility of caring for their own personal cleanliness, punctuality and in managing their money. When they enter school, teach them to view their school assignments as an important responsibility they should take care of. Parental support is essential for your children to succeed. Reveal the consequences of caring for their assigned task. Give rewards if they do their assigned task and impose penalties if they do not.

Third, give detailed instructions. When your child encounters difficult responsibilities at school, determine what you can do to help him or her meet the challenge. Discuss the vital steps to meet the challenge and state your confidence onto your child on his or her ability to overcome the challenge. Try not to carry the burden yourself. This is because shielding them from the task will only prevent them to use their ability to meet the challenge. Instead, strengthen them by teaching them to take responsibility.

Rightly then, responsibility is not just for adults. Children, even at the youngest age must be taught by parents the value of being responsible. Being so is never that easy because foolishness is within the heart of a child. But remember that your fine example is a powerful tool in teaching them to be responsible. So it is your responsibility to teach them this valuable quality. By applying the abovementioned tips, you will surely succeed in your goal of teaching them how to be responsible. This is what parenting entails, taking responsibility and teaching your children to do the same.
