Making Practicing Music Fun

Making Practicing Music Fun

Let’s face it, kids don’t like and won’t necessarily practice if you tell them to do it.

It’s hard to get them to do anything they don’t want to do, so the answer is to help make practicing music more fun.

Scales and exercises are important, but adding a part of practice time used to try improvising can make the whole practice session more interesting. Jamie Aebersold wrote a whole series of play-along books that come with CDs. You can play blues, jazz, salsa, and many more styles. There are other series that do the same thing too. The Big Phat Band has released some of their songs minus the melody/soloist in which you can play with the actual Big Phat Band. That music somewhat advanced compared to the the more basic Aebersold books, but is suitable for a more advanced middle school student or a musician in high school.

As you can better at music everything will become more fun since you will sound better, but doing only scales can kill the fun in practice quickly.
