Save the Crayons, Save the World

Parenting Help Parenting Help Tips She may not be a cheerleader, but 7 year old Abigail is definitely a hero in my eyes.

It all started with one question.  What happens to the crayons at the restaurant if children don’t take them home?

Well, that’s the question Abi posed to Isaac’s restaurant when she was having lunch one day.  They informed her that they would throw them away.  She then asked if Isaac’s would give her the crayons left behind so that she could donate them to shelters and they said no because of the possibility of spreading germs.

Not to be discouraged, Abi kept pondering the dilemma of the wasted crayons for several weeks.

Alas, Abi had a solution.  Why not melt the crayons (kills the germs) and make new ones?

So mom, Donna, was on the hunt to find crayon molds to make Abi’s wish a reality.

When Donna couldn’t find any crayon molds, she thought they would have to give up their recycling quest.

Once again, Abi was determined and suggested to her mom that they use her mother’s soap molds.

Bingo!  They immediately tried a couple and it worked!

Donna and Abigail returned to Isaac’s for lunch and proposed this new idea and they were thrilled.

Since then, Isaac’s has sent memos out to all their restaurants to save all the forlorn crayons.  They are sent to the main office and Abi and her mother pick them up there.

Now, Abi’s idea has ballooned and several restaurants and organizations are donating to her cause.  A local elementary school teacher made a contest to see what class could collect the most used crayons for Abi.  The students collected over 300 lbs. of crayons!  The winners received a collection of Abi’s recycled crayons.

Abi was also showcased as artist of the month at her local library.

Abi still donates her crayons to shelters, orphanages, and other children’s services but she also has started accepting orders.  To top it all off, some of the proceeds from her crayon sales provide food, shelter, and medical attention to abandoned and feral cats in her area.

Abigail’s crayons can be custom ordered in a variety of shapes, colors, and scents.  You can even add sprinkles!  If you are interested in purchasing Abi’s crayons, you can find them in their Ebay store named Abigail’s Recycled Crayons.
